Welcome to Mauritius Biz
A practical, no-nonsense guide to doing business, investing and retiring in Mauritius. Based on real, on-the-ground experience – not a brochure.
Mauritius in a nutshell
Mauritius attracts people for the weather and the work-life balance. Many stay because the business environment is genuinely good – surprisingly so, in fact, for a small island nation. It holds up well even under professional scepticism.
Here’s what you need to know: Mauritius is a small volcanic island (2,040 km²) in the Indian Ocean, about 900 km east of Madagascar. Population around 1.3 million. Three languages in daily use – English, French and Kreol – sometimes all in the same conversation. The country has been a stable parliamentary democracy since independence in 1968, which is a rarity in the region.
The economy is diversified and growing. Financial services, tech, tourism and manufacturing all contribute. The legal system blends French civil law with English common law, which means contracts actually mean something. And then there’s the tax regime: progressive personal income tax from 0% to 20%, corporate tax at 15%, no capital gains tax, no inheritance tax, and free repatriation of profits. It’s not a tax haven – the OECD whitelist status proves that – but it’s genuinely competitive.

Why Mauritius for business and investment?
There are plenty of warm countries in the world. What makes this one different for business? A few things, without the sales pitch:
- Tax efficiency. Personal income tax is progressive from 0% to 20% (first Rs 500,000 exempt). Corporate tax at 15%. No capital gains, no inheritance tax, no wealth tax. Double taxation treaties with 45+ countries including the UK, France, India and South Africa.
- Ease of doing business. World Bank consistently ranks Mauritius in the top tier for Africa. Company registration takes days, not months. The Economic Development Board (EDB) is a single window for permits and licences.
- Political stability. Unbroken democracy since 1968. Independent judiciary. English-based legal system for commercial matters. Contracts are enforceable – which shouldn’t be notable, but in this part of the world, it is.
- Strategic location. UTC+4, which makes it workable for both European and Asian business hours. Direct flights to London, Paris, Dubai, Johannesburg, Mumbai. A gateway to African markets via COMESA and the AfCFTA.
- Quality of life. Year-round warm weather, low crime, good international schools, decent healthcare (private sector). The traffic on the M1 at 8am is genuinely the worst thing about living on the island.
About this site
Mauritius Biz is written from on-the-ground experience in Mauritius – the visa applications, the bank account openings, the school enrolments, and the baffling roundabouts. The content is based on real life on the island, not written from a desk in another country.
The site exists because there’s a real gap in English-language resources about Mauritius. Most of what’s out there is either a government press release or a property developer’s brochure. Mauritius Biz aims to fill that gap with practical, straightforward information – the kind of resource that should have existed years ago.
The site is independent. There are no sponsored posts, no affiliate deals, and no property developers paying for coverage. There are opinions here. Some of them might be wrong. But they’re always rooted in actual experience rather than a quick Google translate of a French article.
